Strategic Directions of NFOWD

In 2004, NFOWD looked upon the developments that have taken place in the area of Disability, both within the country and beyond, and also in view of its strengths and weaknesses, opportunities and barriers, in consultation with its members across the country, reformed its strategic directions. As per the new strategy paper for 2005-2009 “Addressing Disability Together”, some strategic issues are summarized below.

Vision

An inclusive, barrier free and rights based society where all people with disabilities are mainstreamed.

Mission

NFOWD strives to ensure that people with disabilities in Bangladesh have equitable access to their rights and entitlements.

Values

  1. NFOWD takes pride in and promotes our national interests and all that is good, fair and essentially descent in our national culture, values and heritage without becoming parochial.

  2. NFOWD will work to develop the ideas and provide the technical support necessary for achieving its vision.

  3. NFOWD will work together as a network of member organizations to provide a pool of technical skills and human resources to assist and influence each other and other governmental and non-governmental organizations.

  4. Operating as a network means that NFOWD, as an organization, will not implement initiatives other than those specified in this document or those approved by the Membership. Specific initiatives that are identified by NFOWD, will be implemented by one or more of its Member Organizations, or by other governmental and non-governmental organizations, and it will take a shared pride in the achievements.

  5. Working together means that NFOWD will adopt and present the consensus viewpoint of its member organizations whenever it speaks or acts on behalf of its membership.

  6. NFOWD recognizes that it is a part of a bigger alliance against poverty, requiring its behavior to be modest and its approach to be appreciative of the contribution of others.

  7. NFOWD is compelled to nurture an organizational culture that promotes hard work, perseverance, and an unshakeable faith in itself and in the potential of poor and marginalized people with disabilities to overcome the inequity and injustice of poverty and vulnerability.

  8. At all times NFOWD will operate as a voluntary organization with no special political or religious bias. It will however operate with a positive biasness for women and children with disabilities.

  9. NFOWD recognizes that resources are finite and best use has to be made of them.

  10. The NFOWD membership accepts the basic principles included in the strategy paper as guidelines for their own and for NFOWD policy and day-to-day operations:

    • United Nations Standard Rules on the Equalization of Opportunities for Persons with Disabilities

    • The Biwako Millennium Framework

Approach

Bearing in mind the nature of disability and the socio-economic and cultural structure & context in Bangladesh, and also being a part of the large international community, NFOWD believes that its strategic directions should be fully consistent with the overall development approaches of Bangladesh, the global Millennium Development Goals and also the Biwako Millennium Framework. These have collectively influenced NFOWD in formulating its vision & mission, and strategic & organizational objectives.

Along with disability, gender concerns will become a crosscutting theme for all the interventions of NFOWD. In all its program & organizational areas, gender equity will be a strong guiding principle. Which means, NFOWD will promote an environment in which both women & men with disabilities can achieve their full potential.
